DJ Flexxx -- Dipolmat Of Go-Go
KATO – We’ve been keeping up with the thing you’ve been doing, such as the Home Jams , and basically the stuff you’ve been doing to help push that go-go. I know you’re from here, so actually you know what time it is with that. DJ FLEXXX – All my life, man. Born at the Washington Hospital Center. KATO – Yea, my partner here says he knew you real good – Mark Ward. DJ FLEXXX – Yea, man. We grew up around District Heights together – use to play ball together. KATO – You’re considered one of the Gurus of Go-Go around here with working and helping the promote the go-go bands, but have you ever played in any bands yourself? DJ FLEXXX – Nah, I’ve never really played in any bands, but I’ve DJayed for a whole gang of them. My thing has been mainly the support of go-go music in night clubs through records and stuff like that. I grew up on go-go music. Let me put it this way, just like to a person who has grown up in New York and all they listened to all their life was rap. That was their thing that inspired them. For me, it was that go-go. That’s all that I wanted to hear. You know what I’m saying? KATO – I feel you on that one. Now, was the "Water Dance" your first project? DJ FLEXXX – Nah. "Water Dance" was actually the third project. This first project I did was with my original group, DJ Flexxx and The Prophylactic Allstars. The joint we did was called "Prophylactic" which was recorded with Ju-Ju House from EU. KATO – Okay. I know the tune you’re talking about. I mean even though I’ve never really heard the original, we use to hit that cut back when I was playing with Little Benny. DJ FLEXXX – Yea… Back then, Ju-Ju didn’t really have no serious label support, so there was really no way of getting that record out or doing much with it. So, me and a friend of mine put a project together called "The Flexxx Show." We put that one out independently on our own. That didn’t do nothing either, but it was cool. After that was when we went and recorded the water dance, and that took off. Sold a lot of them joints. KATO – Where was that one recorded? DJ FLEXXX – That one was recorded at the Quonset, which is now known as the Legend Night Club. KATO – Now, when was the Groove Theory cut recorded? DJ FLEXXX – That one came out about a year after the "Water Dance" joint. It was around 1995 when we did that project. Basically, they called me up and asked if I wanted to do a track, and I said, "Hell Yea!" KATO – Okay. Now, here’s a question that my partner and me have been trying to figure out. That Heavy D "Big Daddy" joint – who is that band on the go-go mix? I heard a rumor that it was Backyard? DJ FLEXXX – Nah Nah Nah! If I’m not mistaken… Well, I know for sure that it’s Go-Go Mickey "smackin" on it. KATO – I know what the tune is, but just wasn’t sure who was on that cut. DJ FLEXXX – Which one is it? KATO – It’s that "Umm-Umm Good" joint by Rare Essence. DJ FLEXXX – Well, all I can tell you is that I know that Mickey is "smackin" on it along with some cats from Physical Wonders who had a lot to do with that remix. But, I do know that it’s not Backyard. Big G is just on the track. KATO – Now, as far as your work on the radio, I’ve noticed that you brought back on the popular DC Home Jams show. How were you able to swing that off? DJ FLEXXX – On the real, let me tell you how the Home Jams Show came back up. I was doing a Open Mic Night at the Crossroads every Tuesday. And, I got really attached to that thing, man. So, when that fell off we where just trying to figure out another vehicle to get people’s stuff played. You see, man, I want everybody in the city to get a shot to do their thing. All I want out the deal if for somebody to get a platinum or a gold record. And, that’s all, man. I just want to see people make it. Because, people gave me a chance. See what I’m saying? I feel that I owe that to the local artist in the city – just to give ‘em a shot. ‘Cause, that’s all I asked for was a shot. And, that’s what they gave me, man, and I just hit for a home run. And, actually I’ve been what you might call a go-go diplomat for that last three and a half years. I mean, I’ve been on the road from Canada to Cancoon and every where in between just trying to put it down for the go-go. Shoot, I’m in Canada playing Pure Elegance. I’m in Cancoon playing Northeast Groovers. You see what I’m say? And, every where in between. I mean, I’m out west playing Rare Essence. So, you know, a lot of people out don’t know what the hell is going on, but as long as they’re ‘groovin’ with me, I give a damn. They need to be experienced to that thing. You see, that go-go thing, what people don’t understand, is spiritual. It’s further than being a culture. The music is spiritual because it’s something you can feel. You’ve got go-go songs that move you. I mean, you hear them joints and they just touch your soul. And, I really believe in them joints. KATO – That’s basically how we here feel also. It’s something that definitely needs to be experienced and exposed. What other projects do you have up your sleeve at his moment? DJ FLEXXX – Well, I’m about to drop a new single called, "Push It Up." Also, we’re working on a go-go compilation album playing all brand new songs, which so far features, Pure Elegance, Backyard Band, Rare Essence and DJ Kool, along with three DJ Flexxx songs and DJ Rico. Also, keep an eye open for DJ Rico. That’s my artist now, and when I finish doing my thing, that’s who I’m gonna put all the concentration in help to push him real hard to be the next go-go dipomat. KATO – We need all that we can get, man. And believe me, what you are doing is greatly appreciated. DJ FLEXXX – My whole thing is that this is my music and can’t nobody take it from me. I just want everybody to hear it. And on the second single of the go-go compilation – it’s called "Stick Out Your Butt." That’s a joint that Big G and me did a joint together on. It’s going to be red-red hot. Also, I have a song on Salt N Pepa’s new album. The title track which is called, "Brand New."
