MLK Library Now Able to Remain Open on Sundays

With no time to spare, the D.C. Public Library announced last week that the money needed to keep Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library open on Sundays had been found. As part of the 2012 Fiscal Year budget, which goes into effect tomorrow, cuts to the library system’s budget had forced the city’s flagship library to discontinue Sunday hours starting October 2. But this morning, Mayor Vince Gray announced that the $316,000 needed to keep the library open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays had been found. The Lincoln Theatre, Home of the Go-Go Awards, Set To Close Its Doors

The Lincoln Theatre, which has been a U Street landmark (right next to Ben’s Chili Bowl) since the corridor was known as “Black Broadway,” the venue that hosted three Go-Go Awards events, as well as TMOTTGoGo’s 10 Year Anniversary (March 2007), may close its doors next week due to running out of funds.  As reported by DCist: “Earlier this year, Councilmember Vincent Orange (D-At-Large) and [Councilmember Jim] Graham, who sits on the theater’s Board of Directors, were able to secure $500,000 in funding for the Lincoln during budget negotiations. Derrick Leon Davis wins Democratic nod for Leslie Johnson’s seat in Prince George’s County

Unless something God-like and miraculous happens, Troy Davis, 42, is going to be executed tomorrow, Wednesday, September 21, 2011, at 7pm, by lethal injection at a state prison in Jackson, Georgia. Let me say up front I feel great sorrow for the family of Mark MacPhail, the police officer who was shot and murdered on August 19, 1989. I cannot imagine the profound pain they’ve shouldered for 22 angst-filled years, hoping, waiting, and praying for some semblance of justice. Whelp… it’s a good doggone thing that Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback Vince Young could be seen on the sidelines in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome during his team’s 35-31 Sunday night loss, because EAG Sports Management Company has reported that they had become aware of a man posing as Vince Young in the Washington D.C and Prince Georges county area.
