22 Feb GoGo Mickey on The ONE ON ONE w/Kato Hammond (FULL INTERVIEW)
Hey… what’s happening GoGo Heads. Welcome to another ‘syced’ up episode of TMOTTGoGo’s The ONE ON ONE. I am Kato Hammond, Godfather of GoGo Media. And your Host. Also known as the Bill Withers of GoGo. Alright… before we jump in, let me set the table. This is an interview with Milton ‘Go-Go Mickey’ Freeman, one of the go-go percussionists who represents that real D.C. backbone, the congas and percussion that keep the whole band breathing. If you know Rare Essence, then you already know his name is attached to the sound and the energy people came outside for. But what makes this conversation different is this:There are many interviews out there featuring Go-Go Mickey. Plenty of clips. Plenty of conversations. But none as extensive, none that dig this deeply into the music’s history, the early days, the evolution, and his personal journey through it all, the way this one does. This isn’t surface-level talk. This is culture. This is memory. This is lived experience. And what I respect is: it’s not just performance history. He’s also been about passing it on, working with students and showing them the fundamentals of go-go rhythm, call-and-response, and time. This interview was recorded in July of 2022, and it’s one I’m proud to share, because when you hear Mickey talk about go-go, you’re not getting Wikipedia energy… you’re getting first-hand culture. So, without further adu, let’s Do The Mickey!
