Metro Rail Fare Hikes Postponed 1 Day

MyFoxDC – Riders have one more day before Metro fares go up. Fares were supposed to go up on Sunday, but Metro says it is delaying the changes until Tuesday. The delay will give Metro time to post signs on fare machines telling customers that the posted fares apply to riders paying with plastic SmarTrip cards. Riders who use paper cards will pay 25 cents more. The fare changes also include co-called “peak-of-the-peak” charges. Customers traveling at times of high ridership will pay 20 cents more. Metro 1st-Round Fare Increase In Place

A Metro fare increase has taken effect. Monday morning, rush hour commuters are now facing a base fare of $1.95 — up from $1.75. Bus fares, meanwhile, are now $1.50 for SmarTrip card users and $1.70 for cash customers. A second phase of increases is planned for Aug. 1. An additional 20 cents will be added to rail fares at certain times during rush hour that are especially busy. Metro hopes this change will encourage riders to ride during less crowded times, alleviating congestion. Metro Holds Ceremony To Mark 1st Anniversary Of Fatal Crash

Family and friends of those killed in Metrorail’s deadliest crash gathered to remember their loved ones on the first anniversary of the tragedy. Metro marked the day with a ceremony Tuesday at the Fort Totten station and the dedication of a plaque bearing the names of the nine people killed. Several speakers praised the efforts of train operator Janice McMillan, who is credited with saving many lives in her last moments by slamming on the train’s brakes. Metro Red Line Accident Memorial Set For Tuesday’s Anniversary

Metro, the union representing most Metro workers, and families of the victims of the June 22 Red Line crash will hold memorial ceremonies Tuesday. Metro’s ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. next to the Fort Totten Station. Metro plans to invite relatives to unveil a memorial plaque and lay a wreath in remembrance of the nine crash victims, the survivors and the emergency crews that responded to the accident. Metro’s interim general manager, Richard Sarles, has invited the families to attend a luncheon after the ceremony.
