Its about to get real ugly in NYC. Carmelo Anthony, the beloved NY native who was supposed to be the Knicks’ savant, and finally bring a championship trophy back to the city, is more than likely…leaving.

Sources close to the situation have confirmed with ESPN, who first broke this story, that you can pretty much kiss any fantasies of #7 wearing Knicks’ blue-and-orange during the 2014-2015 regular season goodbye. A direct quote from the article:

Despite efforts from New York Knicks president Phil Jackson to convince him to remain under contract, forward Carmelo Anthony hasn’t changed his mind and plans to opt out of his contract and test free agency this summer, according to a league source familiar with the situation.

Ouch. Melo is set to make just over $23 million should he remain on the Knicks’ roster through next season, but that may be but a dream at this point. Phil Jackson and Derek Fisher have maintained in nearly every press appearance that they have made it very clear to Melo that they want him to stay in NY, especially considering come summer 2015, they’re expected to have the necessary cap space they’ll need to bring in another star to help Melo in his title quest. Unfortunately, they may never get that chance.
