By Andrea Jill Greenleigh DC Local Music Examiner Bands and fans alike will converge on the historic Lincoln Theater in the heart of U Street this Sunday night, November 21.  It seems only fitting that DC’s homegrown music, Go-Go, will be celebrated and honored with the 5th Annual Go-Go Awards and Hall of Fame Induction being held in the same venue that was once home to Washington, DC’s musical legends Duke Ellington and Pearl Bailey.  It was Bailey who actually coined the phrase “Black Broadway” when referring to U Street. The Suburban Dad Who’s Dragging Go-Go Into The Future [TDB]

By Sarah Godfrey [TDB] Local law enforcement jurisdictions seem to think that the Capitol Heights Ballroom is at 5401 Norfield Road, but Tom Oehser knows the street address is actually 5400. He also knows that Backyard and Raw Image aren’t playing Marygolds on Sunday nights anymore — they’re at Venus Lounge. The D.C. Police Department’s controversial go-go report, which keeps track of shows around the DMV, contains those, and other, inaccuracies — things that would never sneak onto Oehser’s Gogobeat.com site. “I don’t know why they’re so bad,” Oehser says of the police’s go-go listings. “It’s almost like only certain … Continue reading The Suburban Dad Who’s Dragging Go-Go Into The Future [TDB]

The Go-Go business, the more things change, the more they stay the same and other lessons unlearned [Examiner]

Lessons that should have been learned have not been learned and history continues to repeat itself. Go-Go music may have changed with the emergence of new bands and new sub-genres besides the traditional Go-Go splitting off into the watered down “Grown and Sexy” to the younger bands’ “Bounce Beat”, but it is still business as usual. The entire business needs to be revamped and needs to be treated as more than just a hobby. Money can … Continue reading The Go-Go business, the more things change, the more they stay the same and other lessons unlearned [Examiner]

Adrian Fenty Is Bustin’ Loose

WASHINGTON CITY PAPER By Chris Shott Eight years ago, during a campaign rally in Kalorama Park, I asked then-Mayor Anthony Williams how he intended to woo the District’s all-important go-go demographic. At the time, Kevin “Kato” Hammond of Take Me Out to the Go-Go magazine had been lobbying local leaders about the plight of the District’s indigenous music scene and planned to endorse candidates in the upcoming election. Where did Mayor Williams stand on the issue of go-go? “No one would be surprised that I’d ask, ‘What’s go-go?’” Hizzoner replied. Oh, how far we’ve come. For all its shortcomings, the Fenty Administration at least knows what go-go is. … Continue reading Adrian Fenty Is Bustin’ Loose
