MLK Library Now Able to Remain Open on Sundays

With no time to spare, the D.C. Public Library announced last week that the money needed to keep Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library open on Sundays had been found. As part of the 2012 Fiscal Year budget, which goes into effect tomorrow, cuts to the library system’s budget had forced the city’s flagship library to discontinue Sunday hours starting October 2. But this morning, Mayor Vince Gray announced that the $316,000 needed to keep the library open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays had been found. Chuck Brown and Raheem DeVaughn Headline Vincent Gray’s Inaugural Gala [Examiner]

By Sidney Thomas | DC Music Examiner DC Mayor Vincent Gray celebrated his inauguration with a little help from R&B superstar Raheem DeVaughn and the “Godfather of Go-Go” Chuck Brown. The inaugural gala capped an entire day of events which included a interfaith prayer service, and the official mayoral swearing-in ceremony. The gala was held at the Washington Convention Center, and co-hosted by Big Tigger (WPGC) and Jamie Foster Brown (Sister 2 Sister magazine). Below is video footage from the of Anwan “Big G” Glover’s press conference regarding his release from Radio One’s 93.9 WKYS radio station.  As stated in the clip, Big G says that he was told by the station on Friday, August 30, that he would be indefinitely suspended because of his support to Adrian Fenty in the upcoming Mayoral race… due to Vincent Grays complaint to the station that he was not receiving radio play. Peaceaholics founder Ron Moten held a press conference on Thursday, July 15, right outside City Paper’s office, to protest D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray’s description of Moten as a “Crony” of Mayor Adrian Fenty’s.  It ran about 20 minutes.  Here are the highlights.
