by Jason Cherkis – Washington City Paper Metropolitan Police Department Assistant Chief Diane Groomes tells City Desk that District kids enrolled in the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) are still getting mugged on paydays. So far, five kids have been mugged on paydays and a sixth was mugged the day after a payday. The program started with knives and thefts. Washington City Paper recently reported that muggings and violence against jobs program kids became a common theme last summer. Officials had blamed the muggings on the fact that the kids were required to wear the now-infamous Mayor’s Conservation Corps … Continue reading D.C. Summer Jobs Program: Payday Muggings Continue

After initial obscurity, ‘The DMV’ nickname for Washington area picks up speed

By Paul Farhi Washington Post Staff Writer New York is “the Big Apple” and Chicago “the Windy City,” but unless the earnest and obvious “Nation’s Capital” is your idea of a cool handle, Washington and its environs have never gotten very far in the civic nickname game. We are pleased to report, however, that this could be changing. A nickname has recently emerged that could put the Washington area on the regional nickname map: the DMV. As in, D for the District, M for Maryland, and V for Virginia. Sleek, succinct and inclusive, the name has been in common use … Continue reading After initial obscurity, ‘The DMV’ nickname for Washington area picks up speed

Study Says DC Area Most Educated In The Nation

WASHINGTON – Washington area residents are the country’s smartest. A recently released study says the Washington region has the most educated population of any large metropolitan center in the country. The study by the Brookings Institution is based on 2008 Census data for the 100 largest metropolitan areas. It finds that almost half of adult Washington area residents have college diplomas, and more than one-fifth have graduate or professional degrees. By either measure, the region including D.C. and its suburbs has the most educated population of any large metropolitan center. The city’s brainpower comes as no surprise. The area has … Continue reading Study Says DC Area Most Educated In The Nation

DC Resident Wants To Help Rebuild His Community

(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO) Larae King-Day is a construction worker, a father, a musician and a lifelong DC resident. He’s also been out of work for two long years. King-Day trained as a construction worker through the GSA Building Futures Project but has had no luck finding steady work. “I thought being a Ward 8 resident would give me preference in hiring, but it hasn’t,” says a frustrated King-Day (r). “Its grim out there for the native Washingtonian.” A glimmer of hope for King-Day is the “District Resident Employment & Trade Stimulus Amendment Act of 2010,” legislation currently before the … Continue reading DC Resident Wants To Help Rebuild His Community

DC’s Summer Youth Employment Program Begins With A Rough Start For Some

By KAREN GRAY HOUSTON/myfoxdc WASHINGTON – It was like déjà vu at the nation’s largest summer youth jobs program and it seems as if every year, it’s troubled. Some kids showed up at Sabor Catering and Cafe on Georgia Avenue to discover there were no summer jobs. They say they were told Sabor’s did not have a contract with the Department of Employment Services. Adrian Fenty Is Bustin’ Loose

WASHINGTON CITY PAPER By Chris Shott Eight years ago, during a campaign rally in Kalorama Park, I asked then-Mayor Anthony Williams how he intended to woo the District’s all-important go-go demographic. At the time, Kevin “Kato” Hammond of Take Me Out to the Go-Go magazine had been lobbying local leaders about the plight of the District’s indigenous music scene and planned to endorse candidates in the upcoming election. Where did Mayor Williams stand on the issue of go-go? “No one would be surprised that I’d ask, ‘What’s go-go?’” Hizzoner replied. Oh, how far we’ve come. For all its shortcomings, the Fenty Administration at least knows what go-go is. … Continue reading Adrian Fenty Is Bustin’ Loose
