The Lincoln Theatre, Home of the Go-Go Awards, Set To Close Its Doors

The Lincoln Theatre, which has been a U Street landmark (right next to Ben’s Chili Bowl) since the corridor was known as “Black Broadway,” the venue that hosted three Go-Go Awards events, as well as TMOTTGoGo’s 10 Year Anniversary (March 2007), may close its doors next week due to running out of funds.  As reported by DCist: “Earlier this year, Councilmember Vincent Orange (D-At-Large) and [Councilmember Jim] Graham, who sits on the theater’s Board of Directors, were able to secure $500,000 in funding for the Lincoln during budget negotiations. Go-Go Awards Report As Via Fox 5 [VIDEO]

via MyFoxDC.com: Go Go Music honored its own at the 5th annual awards ceremony and Hall of Fame inductions at the historic Lincoln Theater. The music is native to DC and has been around since the ’70’s.  But it took a while before it got recognition outside of the region. Chuck Brown is the so-called ‘Godfather of Go Go.’  He is still packing them in at concert venues across the country.  He told FOX 5 he takes his hat off to the next generation of Go Go bands who are taking the music genre to the next level. 2009 Go-Go Awards: Nominees and Performance Announced

The 2009 Go-Go Awards is scheduled for The Washington Convention Center on Nov. 1.  In addition to D.C.’s own Comedian/Actor Red Grant hosting this year’s event, some of today’s most prominent acts on the Go-Go curcuit are scheduled to perform. Presented by Peace Abode, the acts scheduled to perform are Familiar Faces, Backyard, Suttle Thoughts, and TCB among others.
