AARP Food Drive Fights Hunger Among D.C.’s Elderly

While hunger can impact anyone’s health and well-being negatively, senior citizens are particularly vulnerable. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), it’s not uncommon for older adults to go to bed hungry. In addition, the elderly, many who live on fixed incomes, often end up choosing between paying for their medicine and buying food. To that end, Pat Jones, associate director for the D.C. chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), said that’s why projects such as its Oct. 14 citywide food drive are important in helping maintain nutrition among low-income and disadvantages seniors. Ronald Moten to Run as Republican in Ward 7 Race

-Via The Washington Informer Ron Moten, former head of the nonprofit Peaceaholics, will now toss his hat into the Ward 7 race as a Republican. During a phone interview Friday with The Washington Informer, Moten, 41, said switching his registration from the Democratic Party to the GOP,  “might not be the most popular thing to do, but it is the right thing to do.” Moten formally announced the switch-over on Oct. 22 during a campaign kick-off at Woodlawn Cemetery. Derrick Davis Defeats Day Gardner In Race for Prince George’s County Council Seat

Democrat Candidate Derrick Leon Davis has coasted to an easy victory Tuesday in the race to fill the Prince George’s County Council seat, which was recently vacated by Leslie Johnson. With all 26 precincts reporting, Davis had 4,004 votes to Day Gardner’s 389.
